The essay as story: history

Though persuasion is at the heart of each essay, it can accept the form of story or history as well. Narrative essays are similar to the stories and other historical evidences. Like in stories, narrative essays make use of story, story teller, characters, events, climax and resolution. Essays sometimes look like a perfect story but with proper analysis. Story is told or narrated by someone with proper description of circumstances, events and actions. But narrative essays employ certain references of the stories and make proper analysis of it. The persona or the narrator of the essay also appears as the character.

To understand the narrative essay, one should closely observe the plot, note the implications of description, dialogue and commentary. A narrative essay is different than a story. Story is built around a specific event or situation, but the narrative essay may be highly personal, moving toward autobiography. Narrative essays may focus on particular event or sequence of events. Sometimes it may just concentrate n a place or personality. Thus, in reading a narrative essay, one should make a special point of looking for the essayist's interpretation. Similarly, one should be attentive to the essayist's personality in the process of both telling the story and interpreting it.
