The fairy tales are not fully structured in terms of modern story and their plot structure. A fairy tale has oral root as in ancient tales. Modern story and novella have contemporary society as the setting and scene. In fairy tales, the tales start from a different location. It begins with river, forest and other areas. In fairy tales, the rustic life and pastoral settings are presented.
Fairy tale has some magical or super-natural qualities in it. Magic and miracles create diversity in the plot structure. The fairy tales became popular before the romantic age in literature. Fairy tales are pathetic, and explore psychic condition of life. Fairy tales are collected by writers. The prince, princess, dragon, some fairies and witch, in the dark forest, stepmother can be some striking sources of a fairy tale. In fairy tales, supernatural elements and miracles and chances are some dominant elements that excel man's virtue. It takes such as hope, loyalty, love, bravery, reward, and victory as the subjects of moral education.
In fairy tale, the story is simple and lucid in style. It doesn't have much narrative complexities. Each event has descriptive and narrative tone. There is lack of implied nature of meaning. All of words are simple but they carry message which sensitize feelings of the readers.
Grimm Brothers' 'Hansel and Gretel' is an example of fairy tale in which the setting is of the forest and it is a story about the poor wood-cutter. The wood-cutter, Hansel, Gretel and the duck that carried Hansel and Gretel represent virtues whereas the step-mother, the colorful bird, and the witch represent vices. Though Hansel and Gretel suffered a lot in their childhood they are confronted every evil and overcame them. The defeat and death of their stepmother and the wicked witch show that the virtue always wins as typical to fairy tale that sometimes imparts moral too.
