Approaching an essay

Essay is a pure form of literature where ideas, reasons and logics work than feelings and imagination as in fiction. Essay as a form of literature can be presented in different ways. As we know the essential quality of essay is persuasion. It must be in our knowledge that essays can persuade us in different ways associating with different forms of literature. It is not confined to the form of straight forward persuasion. It may be narrative, dramatic or poetic in form.

In approaching an essay, we should read it carefully and then review it again. Afterwards, we can associate our reading and review with one of the types of the essay- argumentative, narrative, meditative, dialogue and also impersonation.
  1.  Persuasive or argumentative essay: For persuasive or argumentative essay, we should examine the arrangement of arguments, analogies and assertions made in the essay. The personality of the essayist and the required response of the reader also should be considered for critical analysis.
  2. Narrative essay: For narrative essay, we should examine the narrative elements. Description, dialogue and commentary should be interpreted to comprehend the narrative and persuasive qualities.
  3. Meditative essay: Words, images, ideas, symbols and other poetic elements should be examined to comprehend the persuasion made in the meditative essay.
  4. Dramatic essay: For dramatic essay, dialogue and other dramatic elements such as character, settings, plot etc. should be examined. Dialogue and commentary also should be interpreted.
